Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique
It’s opening night with the Erie Philharmonic, and we start on a joyride over a storied stretch of highway across the American southwest. Michael Daugherty’s Route 66 revs, burns rubber, and streaks across the Warner Stage at six thousand rpm. We then invite rising American pianist Ian Parker to perform one of the twentieth century’s most inventive, propulsive, and fascinating works for piano in Prokofiev’s Piano Concerto No. 3. To cap an evening of dynamic extremes, we perform Berlioz’s infamous Symphonie fantastique. As an artist grappling with his own torrid obsession with a Shakespearean actress, Berlioz created a score replete with sophisticated waltzes, tolling funeral bells, and a falling guillotine!
